ABOUT | Jo Baguley ~ Lawyer & Barrister
My name is Jo Baguley and I’m both a lawyer and barrister with over 25 years’ experience.
My involvement with Northland spans over forty years. I grew up in Kerikeri and attended Kerikeri High School before pursuing a BA/LLB(Hons) at Auckland University.
After many years working elsewhere in New Zealand and abroad, my husband and I returned to Kerikeri in 2005 because we wanted to bring our young family back to my wonderful home town. Following in my footsteps, my two daughters now attend Kerikeri High School.
I love the Bay of Islands and realise how lucky we are to live here. Because of my local background, I have an inherent understanding of the community dynamics in Northland.
NORTHERN ADVOCATE – 15th April 2019
I have 25 years’ of high-quality legal experience. After qualifying, my career took me to Russell McVeagh in Auckland, to Alsop Wilkinson in London and Chapman Tripp in Christchurch, before finally returning to Kerikeri where I became a director of Law North.
- Conducted litigation for commercial clients, including construction companies, insurance underwriters, national trading banks, energy retailers, telecommunications providers, and insolvency experts.
- Acted for a large number of private individual clients
I appeared in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal on a wide range of proceedings like;
- breach of contract;
- Companies Act and Receiverships Act issues;
- I have also attended many mediations and arbitrations as legal counsel for clients who require alternative dispute resolution.
In my resource management and environmental law arena, I regularly appear in the Environment Court and mediations involving resource consent appeals and District Plan appeals in the Northland region. I have also conducted many judicial review proceedings. I was lead legal counsel in the appeals process for the Far North District Plan through to its being declared operative in October 2007. My working knowledge of the Far North District Plan provisions is considerable and I continue to be involved in its current review.
I have a growing client base in Whangarei for applicants and parties to Environment Court appeals. Throughout my time working in the area, I have built a sound working knowledge of the business of local authorities and the political context they operate within. I have a considerable network of professionals in the resource management area who I work with on particular files.
Outside of work, I’m busy with my family and our lifestyle block. I treasure spending time with our girls and our best family times are usually spent camping over the summer at Northland’s stunning beaches and skiing in the South Island during the winter.
I believe it is very important to give back to our community and our unique environment. This is why I became a trustee of the Puketi Forest Trust, which co-manages the Puketi Forest with its overall aim of restoring Puketi to a vibrant, healthy forest. If you would like to know more about the Puketi Forest Trust, please visit their website. I am also honored to Chair the charitable trust Mid North Family Support. This valuable service supports whanau and communities by offering a free professional counselling service for those suffering from alcohol and substance addiction, family violence, depression, and sexual harm.
